Abstract

The construction of underpasses below railways and roads has a serious impact on transport networks. In order to minimize the impact of these works, techniques have been developed using diverse elements such as sheet piling, retaining walls, manual excavations, etc. In this way, and particularly in the case of rail underpasses, traffic stoppages may be reduced to just a few hours, though speed restrictions have to be set in place during the preparatory work. In an attempt to reduce these disruptions, techniques were introduced in the 80’s which were based on the jacking of the structure below the railway and which allowed the structure to be set in place while keeping the railway open to traffic at all times. This article describes a number of innovations which have been introduced in these systems and which enable greater technical and economic optimization of the same.
