Abstract

According to EN ISO 12100 standard, every

industrial machine must be designed and

constructed in order to ensure its safety. This

is accomplished by investing a great deal of

material and economic efforts. However, these

efforts are not always sufficient, thus forcing

to use alternative safety measures in the

management of these machines. The primary

function of these measures is to reduce and/

or eliminate the inherent risks associated to

the machine, i.e. to prevent and/or reduce the

damage occurred in an occupational accident.

A wide range of safety measures is currently

available on the market. Their complexity and

cost usually vary depending on the implemented

security feature. However, one type of low cost

safety measure is mandatory for many machine

types: the emergency stop device (ESD).

Recently, a novel electronic ESD has

been developed. This device is capable of

automatically taking emergency stop actions

when commanded by an external supervisory

system connected to it. In addition, the device

may also be incorporated to any emergency stop

circuit. This device is the subject of the paper.
