Abstract

There are many roofs in urban areas that are so

different in terms of sunlight incidence. Slope

and orientation are decisive factors in solar

energy technologies, and they can be optimized

by installing solar modules fixed to those roofs

that are well oriented.

In Spain, locating the most efficient roofs can be

automatically carried out with LIDAR techniques

using data provided by the Project PNOA 2008-

  1. The flight covers almost all the national

territory and has an average density of 0.5

points/m2 .

This article aims to describe a quick and accurate

methodology to indentify which roofs in urban

areas have suitable orientation and tilt values.

A density of 0.5 points/m2 could be firstly

considered small, but applying very simple post

processing it is enough for the aim of this work.

It is used a Digital Elevation Modelling software

representing a good solution for discriminating

the roof sheets of an urban area that have

greater irradiance incidence.

The detection of these roofs can be a good

tool for promoting implementation of solar

panels with minimal investment and maximum

efficiency.
